2025-26 CES Faculty Fellowship

The Center for Environment and Society (CES) is offering a one-year research fellowship to Washington College faculty members. Proposed fellowship projects should be aligned with CES’s mission to foster greater understanding of the interdependencies between people and the environment through research, education, and civic engagement. The project should share in CES’s vision for a world where citizens and leaders are prepared to steward resilient communities. The Fellow will participate in the life of CES by attending events, using office space at Semans Griswold Environmental Hall, and presenting their work. There will also be the opportunity to engage in any of the following activities: mentoring undergraduate research assistants, engaging in community driven work (local, regional, or global), and collaborating with CES staff on new or existing projects.
The length of the fellowship can include the summer, fall, or spring semester, or a combination thereof for the maximum of one calendar year for tenured faculty. Funding can be used to match sabbatical support to allow for a faculty member to take a second paid semester of leave. It can also be used for leave during a stand-alone semester outside of sabbatical. Finally, it could be used to support a summer project. Pre-tenure faculty can become a fellow for their junior leave, or for summer. The fellowship is meant to provide the fellow with uninterrupted time to focus on research and interaction with CES. Leave replacement that may be necessary for the department of the fellow would be decided on based on discussion of department needs with the Chair, Provost, and CES Director.

Eligibility
Pre-tenure and tenured faculty at any rank are eligible to apply. Applicants should have the support of their department for submission of the application and include a letter of support from their Chair. Any proposal that is linked to a sabbatical request is subject to eligibility criteria and approval for sabbatical in accordance with the faculty handbook guidelines.
CES embraces any disciplinary approach, and we particularly encourage interdisciplinary work as well as work that considers issues of environmental justice, social equity, or access in relation to the research topic and/or way this area of research is conducted, either as a primary or auxiliary goal of the project.

Applications will be reviewed by the two CES staff and two faculty who will be selected after applications are submitted to avoid conflicts of interest.
